Why is Amy wearing said uniform on what appears to be a futuristic spaceship?
Why is Rory dressed like a centurion again?
Is "Time can be re written" a continuing story arc?
Can I wait till Dec 25th to see this?

Prostitution Vs Deforestation

Share

This is the best news story of the week as far I'm concerned...

From The Guardian

Environmental organisations today expressed outrage over a plan by local authorities in the Abruzzo region of central Italy to combat prostitution with deforestation.

For decades, local law enforcement and politicians have struggled to police the Bonifica del Tronto road, a haven for the sex trade that runs inland for more than 10 miles from the Adriatic coast alongside the river Tronto. Over the years, cameras have been installed, raids mounted, 24-hour patrols implemented and the mayors of towns near the road have signed bylaws imposing fines on prostitutes' clients. All to no avail.

At the end of last month, the regional government's public works chief, Angelo Di Paolo, announced that the time had come for drastic measures. He said he had agreed with provincial and municipal representatives to cut down all the vegetation "around and along the banks [of the river Tronto]", in which the prostitutes ply their trade.

A local authority "ought to contribute to the solution of problems relating to law and order," said Di Paolo. But in a statement three environmental groups, including the WWF, said that the scheme would destroy 28 hectares (69 acres) of woodland vital to local ecosystems, saying the only crime of the thousands of trees on the local authorities' hit list had been to "offer with their fronds shelter and intimacy to sex slaves".

As everyone knows prostitutes are the most cunning of all woodland creatures, best to get them out now before they start foraging and storing food for the winter.

Also get rid of the "Cespuglio amoroso della prostituta" a nasty evergreen that has been known to "offer with their fronds shelter and intimacy to sex slaves"

Backpacks aren't actually people!!!

The Canadian National Post really do know how to get a subtle message across.
They created a set of printable subway etiquette posters for the Toronto Transit Commission, where, apparently, people don't know any better.

I think that poster can apply quiet easily to the Irish public transport system as well.
If you would like to print out your own copy of this poster you can find them here.

Also, spot the name of the journalist who wrote that article National Post.

I SWEAR I wasn't googling my own name.Honest

Doctor Who regeneration was 'modelled on LSD trips'

Share
From The BBC

Doctor Who's regenerations were modelled on bad LSD trips, internal BBC memos have revealed.

The Doctor's transformations were meant to convey the "hell and dank horror" of the hallucinogenic drug, according to papers published on the BBC Archive.

Regenerations were introduced in 1966 to allow writers to replace the lead actor. New Doctor Matt Smith is the 11th Time Lord.

The papers also reveal the difficulties of bedding in a new Doctor.

In an internal memo dating from 1966, producers outlined how the original Doctor, William Hartnell, would be transformed for his successor Patrick Troughton.

The whole idea of regenerating the Doctor was a flash of genius that's kept Doctor Who fresh

It also tackled the "horrifying experience" of the regeneration.

"The metaphysical change... is a horrifying experience - an experience in which he relives some of the most unendurable moments of his long life, including the galactic war," it said.

"It is as if he has had the LSD drug and instead of experiencing the kicks, he has the hell and dank horror which can be its effect," the memo added.

Discussing his appearance, the document stated: "His hair is wild and his clothes look rather worse for wear (this is a legacy from the metaphysical change which took place in the Tardis)."

The documents also reveal how new Doctors have faced hostility from viewers.

Some members of the audience felt Troughton "exaggerated the part".
William Hartnell as the first Doctor

"Once a brilliant but eccentric scientist, he now comes over as a half-witted clown," said one viewer.

Another told the BBC's Audience Research Department: "I'm not sure that I really like his portrayal - I feel the part is exaggerated - whimsical even - I keep expecting him to take a great watch out of his pocket and mutter about being late like Alice's White Rabbit."

His successor Jon Pertwee fared a little better in 1970, although a research report following his first appearance declared: "Reaction to this first episode of the new Dr Who series can hardly be described as enthusiastic."

Tom Baker's debut also drew much criticism.

"General opinion was that the new Doctor Who is a loony - he is an eccentric always, but the way it was presented made him stupid," said one viewer.

And in 1984, Colin Baker proved to be a turn-off, with one viewer finding him "too stern" and another "too aggressive".

Reaction to Sylvester McCoy's debut in 1987 was even worse. His "approval rating" was considerably lower than Colin Baker's, although the reception given to his sidekick Mel, played by Bonnie Langford, was worse.

Roly Keating, the BBC's director for archive content, said: "The whole idea of regenerating the Doctor was a flash of genius that's kept Doctor Who fresh and exciting for 47 years now.

"As we welcome Matt Smith and Karen Gillan into the Tardis, it's the perfect moment to remember his predecessors and also to celebrate the work of the BBC Archive in preserving these documents and photographs for future generations."

Interesting snippet from the BBC about the concept of regeneration and the reaction some fans had to the new Doctor, I kinda would have liked if the had some comments regarding the 3 newest Doctors. Oh well i guess this is what happens on a quiet news day.

Pub evacuated after Monty Python prop mistaken for grenade

Share
From: The Telegraph

Bomb disposal teams were called in and buildings evacuated after workmen mistook a Monty Python film prop for a hand grenade.

Water company engineers spotted the object when they lifted up a fire hydrant cover during work on a street in Shoreditch, east London.

The road was cordoned off and a nearby pub was evacuated amid fears that the "grenade" could explode.

But after nearly an hour of analysis bomb experts realised that the cause of the scare was in fact a copy of the "Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch" used by Eric Idle to slaughter a killer rabbit in the 1975 film Monty Python And The Holy Grail.

The fictional weapon looks more like a golden ornament than a hand grenade; it was based on the Sovereign's Orb used at royal coronations.

The prop has become a popular in-joke among Python fans and replicas can be bought on eBay for as little as £14.

An spokeswoman for Islington police confirmed that the device was a toy and that had been no danger to the public

Local businesses criticised the police for taking so long to realise there was no threat.

Alberto Romanelli, owner of the Windmill put that was evacuated, said: "I lost a good hour's worth of business."
__________________________

Ahhhh..... Gotta admit thats as funny as hell, 34 years later and that "throw away" gag is still causing hilarity. Before 2001 would anyone have really thought it was a bomb or such? Its kinda a sad state of affairs that a "toy" can in still panic in the public.

Looks like a explosive device doesn't it. Im sure it was the words HOLY that scared the shit out of the workman

...And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy." And the Lord did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats ...... And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it." Amen

Its part of an invasion i tell you...

A Dalek from Dr Who was found submerged in a pond by volunteers enlisted to clear it of rubbish.

The group had already fished out an old table football game and a skateboard when they bumped into the Dalek head, which was covered in weeds.

Sales executive Marc Oakland was pushing a rake around the bed of the shallow pool when he found the object with its distinctive eye stalk.

The 42-year-old said: "I'd just shifted a tree branch with my foot when I noticed something dark and round slowly coming up to the surface.

"I got the shock of my life when a Dalek head bobbed up right in front of me.

"It must have been down there for some time because it was covered in mould and water weed, and had quite a bit of damage.

"One of the dome lights was smashed, but the eye-stalk was intact and the head and neck stayed in one piece as I carefully lifted it out."

Pond warden Tony Brown, 70, was leading the volunteer squad clearing dumped rubbish from the pond, near Beaulieu, Hants.

He said: "We made a very thorough search of the rest of the bottom of the pond and there were definitely no alien remnants lurking.

"We've all agreed it best to keep the pond's exact location under wraps.

"The last thing we want are sci-fi fans descending on the pond frantically seraching for other Dalek parts."

Mr Brown, who trained as a pond warden with Southern Water, has been helping clear out the area for the past eight years.

He said: "We've dredged up everything from shopping trolleys, toys, and bicycles.

"But this is the first time a Dalek's appeared. We have no idea how it ended up in there, or how long ago.

"We discovered the BBC often took the Daleks out on location for filming, and they travelled to Hampshire on at least one occasion in the 1980s, when Colin Baker played the Timelord.

"Who knows, this might be the remains of one of the originals from the old TV series. I'm told they they were built to last."

Can't a guy just like fetish wear?

Anti-crime suit or fetish wear. You decide.

A
nti-crime suit or fetish wear. You decide.

Friday nights are "me time." I like to curl up on the couch with a big bag of shelled nuts and watch Ghost Whisperer with my cat, Monster Truck. Once that's over I bundle all of my rage at how terrible that show is, put on my leather pants and PVC mask and head to a local club where I flog strangers with a variety of fun instruments. Jennifer Love Hewitt's face floats in front of me, like the type of ghost that whispers to her every Friday night, and I heed her call with another paddling. Now, my outfit may be outrageous, and my beating of grown men and women masochistic and my cat is actually a teenage boy, but I am not gay. And neither is Batman.

For more than 70 years, people have misconstrued Batman's living situation and exploits as evidence of homosexuality, the main trigger in this gay gun being Robin, Batman's youthful, plucky sidekick. But the introduction of Robin stemmed not from a deep-seated (ho ho!) desire to make Batman gay, but to create a relatable character for the boys reading these adventures. Making Robin a fellow orphan was the easiest way to go. Was Batman supposed to pull up to Robin's parents' house every night and honk his Bat-horn, signalling another night of danger? Preposterous. And it would be poor manners for the über-wealthy Bruce Wayne to let young Richard Grayson stay in a dingy orphanage while he sipped aged ginger ale and ate delicious candied yams in the opulence of Wayne Manor. Adopting this orphaned young man just made sense.

I will concede that Batman was not the ideal father as he was constantly putting young Dick into harm's way and spending most of his spare time ROMANCING LADIES. What? Ladies? Is it true? Oh, let's see now, there's the alluring Silver St. Cloud; Talia al Ghul, the mother of Batman's biological son, Damian; Sasha Bordeaux, Bruce Wayne's sexy former bodyguard; and the most powerful, sought-after woman in the world, a little lady known to everyone as Wonder Woman.

That's a lot of women to date just for a "cover." And really, is there any point in creating a cover with Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman? Batman's on-again-off-again love-hate S&M relationship with the feisty criminal serves no purpose except utter sexiness. If he was gay she'd either be behind bars immediately or they'd become best friends who shop at fetish fashion stores every weekend after a mimosa-enriched brunch.

Debating Batman's sexuality seems slightly ridiculous. Not because he's fictional, but because, unlike most men, straight or gay, Batman's mind isn't on sex all day long. The idea that our brains are constantly churning erotica is true, as evidenced by my fantasizing about Talia al Ghul, Catwoman and Wonder Woman since I began writing this article, but these sex-thought standards simply wouldn't apply to Batman. Why? Because he spends 90% of his waking day thinking about how to stop crime. His crusade is all-consuming and the women who filter through his life are distractions from what he really craves: beating up outlandishly dressed criminals while dressed as a bat.

He's a crimesexual and that's a fact of fiction.
